Agricultural Wire Mesh: Crop Protection, Trellis & Screening

Quick answer

For general farm use, galvanised welded or woven mesh covers most jobs: fine 6–13mm mesh for crop and produce screening, 25–50mm mesh for tree guards and trellis support, and heavier woven field fence for livestock and boundaries; choose galvanised or PVC coatings for outdoor durability.

Common Agricultural Uses

Wire mesh on farms is highly versatile. The same product family covers crop protection (excluding birds, rabbits and deer), trellis and plant support, tree guards against browsing and strimmer damage, and screening for grading grain and produce. Matching aperture and gauge to the task avoids over-spending on heavy mesh where light mesh will do.

Crop Protection & Tree Guards

Light galvanised or PVC-coated mesh excludes birds and small mammals without shading crops excessively. For tree guards, a 25mm aperture welded tube protects young bark from rabbits, deer and strimmers while allowing airflow. Choose a gauge heavy enough to resist deer rubbing — around 16–14 SWG for established guards.

Trellis & Plant Support

Rigid welded mesh panels make durable trellis for climbing crops such as beans, cucumbers and vines. A 50–100mm aperture gives plenty of room for tendrils and harvesting. Galvanised wire resists weathering; PVC-coated mesh suits ornamental and food-contact situations and is gentler on stems.

Grain & Produce Screening

For grading and cleaning, woven mesh aperture is selected to pass or retain a target particle size. The reference below maps common mesh counts to nominal openings; see mesh count to opening size for the full method and our screening and sieving page for vibrating screens.

Material & Coating for the Farm

  • Galvanised steel is the economical default for most outdoor agricultural mesh.
  • PVC-coated mesh resists corrosion from soil, fertiliser and animal contact, and is gentler on plants and livestock.
  • Stainless steel suits food-contact screening and wash-down areas where hygiene and corrosion matter.
  • Match gauge to the load: trellis and tree guards need heavier wire than bird netting.

Frequently asked questions

What mesh size keeps birds off crops?

A 13mm to 25mm aperture light galvanised or plastic mesh excludes most birds while letting in light, air and pollinators at the larger end. For small birds and to also deter insects, drop to finer netting around 6–13mm. Support the mesh on a frame so birds cannot peck through where it touches the crop.

What wire mesh is best for tree guards?

Use a welded mesh tube with about a 25mm aperture and 16–14 SWG galvanised wire. This protects young bark from rabbits, deer and strimmer damage while allowing airflow to prevent rot. For deer-prone sites use a taller guard and heavier wire so animals cannot crush or rub it down.

Can I use welded mesh as a garden trellis?

Yes. Rigid galvanised or PVC-coated welded mesh panels make a durable, long-lasting trellis for beans, cucumbers, peas and vines. A 50–100mm aperture gives tendrils room to climb and makes harvesting easy. Fix panels to posts or a wall frame and choose 14–12 SWG wire so the panel stays rigid under plant load.

What mesh do I need to screen grain?

Screening aperture depends on the grain and what you are removing. As a guide, roughly 4 mesh (about 4.75mm) suits coarse cleaning, 8 mesh (about 2.36mm) suits seed grading, and 20 mesh (about 0.85mm) removes dust and fines. Use woven mesh and select the opening just larger than the product you want to keep.

Should agricultural mesh be galvanised or PVC-coated?

Galvanised steel is the economical default and handles most outdoor farm use. PVC-coated mesh costs more but better resists corrosion from soil, fertiliser and animal contact, and is gentler on plants and livestock. For food-contact screening and wash-down areas, stainless steel mesh offers the best hygiene and corrosion resistance.
